library sale! {book haul}

I had been looking forward to my local library's massive book sale for weeks (as some of you are very well aware), and I finally came home with this lovely stack of eight paperbacks last week.

Black Beauty
by Anna Sewell

As you can see in the photo above, this isn't the edition I bought. Mine is actually a plain boring red on front, but the spine is beautiful! And yes, I have read this book before. And seen the movie (countless times). That little red paperback captured my attention, though, and I thought maybe it's time to re-read this wonderful classic!

Only the River Runs Free
by Bodie and Brock Thoene

I love Bodie and Brock Thoene's biblical fiction (what I've read, anyway), and I've been meaning to read this Irish series forever. Because Ireland. Honestly, I'm not even 100% sure what the plot line is...

Holding Up the Earth
by Dianne E. Gray

This one was a new discovery -- it's about a girl in foster care who falls in love with a farm. The cover is beautiful, the title is beautiful, and it involves a farm. I thought I'd give it a shot.

Riding Lessons
by Sara Gruen

I've seen this one on Goodreads and have been waffling on whether or not to read it. But it's a horse book, so of course I finally caved. Hopefully it's a good one -- adult horse books are few and far between.

Flying Changes
by Sara Gruen

I doubly hope Riding Lessons is good, because I bought the sequel, too...

West Wind
by Mary Oliver

It's about time I picked up a book of poetry by Mary Oliver. I have read few of her poems, but enjoyed them all. I look forward to reading more of her work in this little book!

The Two Towers
by J.R.R. Tolkien

Before you ask: yes, I have read this before. LotR is one of my favorite series -- both book and movie -- ever. I already had all three books in one volume, which makes it unpleasantly heavy to hold while reading, and my dad recently gave me a copy of The Fellowship of the Ring. And do you see that cover? It's beautiful. Plus...

The Return of the King
by J.R.R. Tolkien

...they also had book three, which is possibly even more beautiful. And both books are in pristine condition.

Have you bought/borrowed any new books lately? I've heard that some libraries don't have sales (gasp!) -- does yours? Also, I'm curious: do you consider Black Beauty a children's book?

  1. My library does not have sales!!! I think it's because they are one branch of many in my city... and they share books with the other libraries, or donate them, or something...but still. TRAGIC. The books you picked up sound interesting!! Let us know how they are - I might want to try a few of them! And I suppose yes, I would consider Black Beauty to be a children's book... because I read it when I was quite young... but I'm not sure! How is it classified?

    1. Oh no! That is tragic. I'll certainly let you know how the books are, but I have quite the overstuffed to-read shelf, so it could be a while... As for Black Beauty, it's a classic, but it is often considered a children's book, so I guess it's a classic children's book? But I wonder if it was originally written specifically for children. This all-important question (obviously, my life is terribly exciting) really makes me want to re-read it soon.

  2. Book hauls are the best, especially when Lord of the Rings ends up in the pile

    1. Yeah, who needs B&N when there are fabulous library sales to explore? :)
I'm super curious about the Sara Gruen books -- I'll definitely let you all know what I think!

  4. I'm pretty sure my library doesn't have sales (I'm also not entirely convinced it has books, either - mostly there are just computers...), so I'm very envious of you. And the spine on your copy of Black Beauty is GORGEOUS! (Also, in answer to your question, yes, Black Beauty is a children's book to me. But that could just be because I read it as a child...)

    1. Oh no! You're the second person with no library sales... I hope you have a lovely used bookstore nearby, at least? And goodness, someone should sell a few of those computers and replace them with a few shelves of shiny new books. :)

Hmm... ok, sounds like the consensus so far is: Black Beauty = children's book. I read it as a child, so that's always been my assumption too. Thanks for weighing in!

  5. Yes my library has sales!! They at least have one once a month...or bi-monthly AND they have a table of like books for a few cents in between times. Basically ... I love my library a lot. xD (Although I do NOT love that the stickers usually don't come off without tearing covers. -_-)
OMG SO MUCH TOLKIEN!! :D And I sense a small love of horses here. ;)

    1. Monthly sales?! I would need another bookshelf if my library did that (and some more money...). That's awesome.

Haha, "small love of horses" -- that's a bit of an understatement! :)

  6. Oh that's so cool! We had one of these, or maybe still have, at the library I go to. Didn't put much attention to it but now realizing I probably should have. Looks like you have some great reads. Looking forward to your next post! Great blog by the way

  7. Lovely LOTR editions! I would buy those too even though I've read them. ;)

Yay, I'm glad I'm not the only NaNoWriMo newbie haha!
